It's that time again! This has been a good week for reading. I haven't gotten through a lot, but it's been high quality!
XO Manowar #1 - Valiant Comics had a huge release for the return of XO Manowar. Not a character I was particularly familiar with before, but I am super excited for this series. The first issue was amazing, a definite can't miss! Check out my full review here https://www.thefresnerd.com/home/2017/3/23/xo-manowar-1-review
Nemesis - I've had this in my queue for a while and finally got a chance to read Mark Millar and Steve McNiven's Nemesis. The title character is a billionaire (think Batman) who has decided to become a supervillain (think not Batman). He's a genius and has everything planned out, taking down the top cops around the world. In this story he may have met his match. If you love mystery and great action then this is another must read. Go get on it. Plus a movie is in early early works on this. Know the story before it eventually comes out!
The Handmaid's Tale - I haven't read this completely yet, but I started it this week. The classic dystopian novel from Margaret Atwood, this has been on my list ever since I read Oryx and Crake. And with the Hulu series coming up, I wanted to finally sit down and read this.
What's coming this week?
I actually don't know what's up for this week yet. I haven't looked at the upcoming comic releases, and I anticipate continuing through The Handmaid's Tale, but when have I ever truly known what I was going to end up reading for the week??
Let me preface this review by telling you that I've never read any Manowar comics in the past. I actually had no real exposure to the character or who he was. So with this issue being my first exposure, let me just say, "Ho-ly shit!" I can't wait to see what happens, this dude is a badass!
The story starts off with Aric from Urth working on a farm, with his lover asking about his past back on Urth. We see some flashbacks to his past life, but he has clearly come to appreciate his life of simplicity. But war pulls people in, and Aric is conscripted into battle. And that's when things hit the fan.
He is seen as fodder for the battle, but he manages to fight his way through the enemy while barely armed. We see that he clearly knows plenty about war and battle. As the day's battle reaches its end, Aric is called to see the general and sent on a suicide mission.
As the story ends, Aric is calling upon his armor (who we saw briefly as he prepared for war) "one last time." There's really not much more I can say about this other than "wow!"
I haven't been this excited about a comic in a while. XO Manowar has already shot to the top of my favorites list. If you haven't started yet, then this is a comic you need to be reading! 5/5 to this, no question about it.
