This week we get a new installment of "The Magic Order" and it is now solidly one my list of favorite current series. The story itself is brilliant, but it's the way the story is told that really grabs me. This issue starts with Cordelia telling the story of how she was born, escaping death even before birth, and continuing to escape deadly situations throughout her life....only to reveal that she is performing for a children's birthday party. I loved both the surprise that this story was being told to children, as well as the fact that this was alluded to in the first issue.
Once we get past this initial story telling, we find that the Magic Order is continuing to search for whoever is murdering wizards, all while more wizards are being murdered. As gruesome as it can be at times, I loved the various ways that Millar came up with to take out these wizards. Clearly they can't be handled like a typical hit, and the creativity that goes into their deaths matches up with this.
This is another solid issue and the amazing art by Olivier Coipel only enhances the story. I'm no art critic, but the style he uses matches beautifully with the tone of the story. The colors are vibrant when appropriate, and images become darker and more menacing when the story calls for it.
I am really loving that this series is doing such a brilliant job of blending the real world and the world of magic. As a huge fan of Harry Potter, it's great to see someone taking this idea to the next level.
