I have always been a fan of fantasy and magic. Growing up my favorite series (after graduating beyond the Goosebumps books) was the Dragonlance series. Then I was sucked in my the Lord of the Rings movies, and obviously I was a huge fan of Harry Potter.
One of the things about Harry Potter that helped it stand out in my mind was that it was supposed to be set in the "real" world. Not a fantasy world full of magic and mythical creatures, but our normal world, only with this hidden world of magic that we never got to see.
Which finally brings us around to what we're here to discuss today: the new series The Magic Order written by Mark Millar and illustrated by Olivier Coipel. The series follows a group of magicians living among us, protecting us from dark forces. We get glimpses into what has happened in the past, unknown to "normal" people, and we see some of the dark forces actively working to cause us harm.
From the onset we are shown that his is not your typical comic book. We see a wizard manipulating a child in order to commit a very graphic murder of another wizard, followed by meeting our main protagonists, the Moonstone family.
We also get a quick introduction to Madame Albany, the cousin to the murdered wizard, and apparent prime suspect in his death. Everything about her, from her clothing to the company she keeps reeks of evil, yet she implies that she has been wronged by others in the magical world in the past, which can have an effect on even the best of us.
This is the first new series from Millarworld since being purchased by Netflix. While I'm not sure if the intent is specifically to turn this into a movie or TV series (my mind obviously wanders that way with anything involving Netflix), this first issue definitely has my attention.
In addition to the wonderful concept, Olivier Coipel's art style brings an other-worldly feeling. Throughout this issue, I felt like I was in a world that was real, but something was just not quite right. This is a great example of the art style furthering the feel of the story.
All-in-all, this is a series you aren't going to want to miss. The first issue is out June 13, 2018, so get to your local comic shop and pick this up!
