From the first time I heard there was going to be a Han Solo movie, my reaction has always been sort of "meh". I'm always excited for anything Star Wars related, but I never felt like there was a lot of backstory on Han Solo that I really needed. Add that to some of the rumors about production having issues, plus Lord and Miller being fired in the middle of the movie, and ultimately my expectations were not that high.
So given all of that, I have to say I really really enjoyed this! It was a fun action movie, with a lot of appropriately funny moments. I was laughing, I was tense with excitement, and I was genuinely shocked several times. All-in-all, this movie kept me intrigued throughout.
One of the great things about this was the excellent use of practical effects for the aliens. The right balance of puppetry and special effects came together in this one.
As I mentioned before, there were a lot of shocking moments. Despite this being a prequel, and we ultimately know where Han is going to end up in the future, there were a lot of surprises. Part of that comes from the new characters that were introduced, but also some new wrinkles to the Star Wars world.
Speaking of the characters, I really like a lot of the new characters we met. Yes, we already knew that Donald Glover would be amazing as Lando, but what surprised me was how much the other characters stood out. I always think of Woody Harrelson as the goofy guy on Cheers but he really is a great actor. His role as Tobias Beckett was great, and you can see the influence he had on Han.
Overall, this movie kept me sucked in throughout, and I'm actually looking forward to a potential sequel (yes, they left enough hanging out there that they could make another movie to fit in between this and A New Hope). From me this is getting a Fresnerd B+.
