We're down to less than 48-hours until we get to see Avengers Infinity War! We've been texting back and forth all week about this, and we're both more excited about this than we were for The Last Jedi. The main reason is that this is a conclusion. This is a decade and a ton of movies leading up to this. And as Marvel Studios prepares to go into Phase 4, this is a time for things to end. There are real stakes, and that means people are going to die.
We've seen characters go in the past, but they were always support guys. We're going to see some main people go in this movie. So let's get into our predictions.
While we most likely didn't capture everyone, we did try to come up with as many characters from the movie as possible (we didn't use a site like iMDB to avoid potential spoilers), and looked at who was safe and who was likely to go. So let's get to it!
We had a few consensus characters who will make it through this movie.
Ant-Man and The Wasp - There's a movie coming out in a couple months. Pretty sure they're safe.
Spider-Man - Again, another movie is coming
Black Panther (and supporting cast) - Although Infinity War was probably too far along to change much when we learned how popular most of the Black Panther was to become, I think these guys are safe. We could see a more minor supporting character go, like Daniel Kaluuya's W'Kabi.
The Guardians of the Galaxy - The next Guardians is one of the few "confirmed" Phase 4 movies. So the main characters are safe....probably.
Doctor Strange - We had a little debate on this, but ultimately Marvel didn't make an origin movie just to kill off the title character (although their timing was smart, if the movie had totally tanked at the box office the the good Doctor could become Thanos fodder).
Bruce Banner/The Hulk - Marvel has previously talked about this character having a character arc over the next three movies, starting with Thor Ragnarok so it seems like he's safe.
The challenge with this, is there are so many characters whose death could serve a purpose, but who will it be?
Nick Fury/Maria Hill/Agent 13 - S.H.I.E.L.D. is disbanded, but we still love so many of their command staff. It seems like someone is going to die, but who? Could Nick Fury go, and Maria Hill step in to lead the government-side for the Avengers?
War Machine - After crippling him in Civil War it would be cruel to kill him off.
The Collector/Nova Prime/Corpsman Dey - Thanos still needs to get a couple of Infinity Stones, and there's going to be some consequences for whoever stands in his way. Although I think The Collector is supposed to be an Elder of the universe, like in the comics, so he might be safe.
Falcon/Valkyrie/Heimdall/Hawkeye - Although Captain America and Iron Man are the face of the Avengers, there are plenty of other popular support heroes, and (at least) one of them is going to die.
Black Widow - She gets her own line, separate from the last four. She's got a bigger leadership role. I think she's safe, but no guarantees.
These Guys Should Take Out Insurance
And now we're on to the characters we think are likely to die. Let's start with our consensus picks.
Loki - Loki has always played both sides. He even says in Thor Ragnarok that the side he's on depends on his mood. I think he ultimately gives the tessaract to Thanos, but he's pushed his luck too far.
Drax - We both agree that if one of the main Guardians is going to die, it will be Drax. He's already shown himself to rush into action without thinking. He may have learned from that, but given the opportunity to avenge his family will he be able to hold back?
Nebula - Similar to Drax, she's intent on killing Thanos and she's not likely to ask for help.
Captain America - We both agree that Cap is the main Avenger who is going to go. He's shown that he is willing to sacrifice himself, and his sacrifice could be what pulls the Avengers back to gether.
And the rest. Here are Jaime's picks:
Bucky - Bucky is the other sort of support hero that we could see go. We know that he's in Wakanda with Cap, and someone isn't making it out of that battle alive (although I'm really looking forward to seeing Bucky and Falcon continue to hate each other).
Pepper Potts - The sort of emotional death you need in a movie like this. It helps motivates the characters, but maybe forces Iron Man to act without thinking. Plus there's that theory that she's in one of the Iron Man suits battling Thanos.
Iron Man - Tony's sacrifice would complete his overall story arc of overcoming his hubris and selfishness. It would also rhyme well with the moments in the first Avengers movie where Cap attacks him on never making the sacrificial play and also doing it at the end. Plus, Robert Downey Jr is too expensive and should hand off the universe to others.
Vision - In order for the stakes to be really elevated Thanos has to acquire all the stones and that includes the Mind Stone that is a part of Vision.
Scarlet Point - At this point I think Wanda would welcome death so as to join both her brother and lover (Vision).
So what do you think? Who will make it and who won't survive Infinity War?
