Today we're looking at issue #1 of the Dark Nights Metal tie-in Batman The Red Death. Just a heads up, there will be some spoilers in this post!
In this issue we meet another of the Bruce Wayne's who have come to Gotham. On Earth-52, an aging Batman is looking for a way to continue to fight crime, and he's found a way by taking the Speed Force from The Flash.
One of the more interesting aspects of this issue is that this Batman is both a hero and a villain. We obviously see him as a villain when he comes to Gotham alongside the Batman Who Laughs, but back in his own home he continues to fight crime (seriously, Scarecrow isn't going to be terrorizing anyone again soon), and he is truly just trying to save his own world. When you look at it that way, it's hard not look at him as a hero.
Now we would of course argue that a true hero wouldn't try to save his home at the expense of another, but that would entail a perfect hero, one who doesn't have flaws.
This issue has me intrigued to see how future tie-ins and origin stories for the other Batmen play out. Josh Williamson gave us a great story, and another great story to go along with the Dark Nights Metal series!
