I've been looking forward to seeing this movie since it came out a couple months back. Now I'll be honest, I'm not familiar with the Justice League Dark comics, but I am familiar with Constantine from his other appearances. Fortunately, I had a chance to talk to a friend who brought up the JLD comics before I posted this!
Let's start with the first five minutes, which is one of the craziest, most intense scenes I've seen in a long time. A woman gets rear ended in her car, only to find a demon is the one who hit her! She seems them all around the street and goes tearing down the street in her car to escape. A man is crying out for his family aiming a gun at more demons. And a woman is preparing to throw her baby off of a church because he is the devil. All this in the first few minutes sets up the rest of the movie.
I really enjoyed the magical elements of this movie. I'm a big fan of fantasy books (I grew up on the Dragonlance series), so it's not a surprise that I love this type of stuff in movies. It's a nice departure from your standard "I'm super strong!" type of superhero. There is strategy in the battles that you don't always see in a fist fight.
This move did a great job of introducing a lot of characters and giving just enough background for me to care about them and know who they are, without wasting a lot of time. Outside of Batman (more on that in a minute) and Constantine, I barely knew who anyone in this movie was, but by the end I knew them well enough to care.
So, Batman. I think the biggest fakeout this movie gives is having Batman right at the forefront of the cover. He was really a side character, and honestly, did not need to be here at all. He spent most of the movie looking unimpressed at the magic going on around him. I'm not sure if he got tossed into this movie to remind everyone what world they were in, but it felt forced.
As a whole, I enjoyed this movie, although there were parts that felt forced. It's worth a watch. Overall, I give it a B-.
