This week's edition of "Reading Things" is going to be focused on one thing: Secret Empire.
Warning, there will be some minor spoilers.
I spent some time catching up on the Secret Empire series this week. There are lots of things we already knew: Captain America is secretly a Hydra agent (if you didn't know this, then you haven't spent any time on the internet because people sort of lost their shit over this revelation).
Well, it's a little more complicated than that. After a bunch of convoluted stuff (honestly, what isn't convoluted in comics?), the Cosmic Cube is personified as a young girl, but she spent a bunch of time hanging out with Red Skull. Ultimately she rewrites Captain America's past as a secret Hydra agent.
A bunch more stuff happens, and now Captain America is head of S.H.I.E.L.D. He is granted full power when the Chitauri attack (strange how that happens when someone brings a queen egg to the planet!).
Now the United States is under the control of Hydra. Captain Marvel and many of Earth's greatest heroes are trapped in space thanks to a planetary defense shield. The Defenders are trapped in a dark dimension in New York. And the remaining heroes are part of an underground resistance.
This is where the story picks up.
The resistance picks up some new information. The Cosmic Cube was disassembled and spread across the planet. With it, they can rewrite history to put things back as they belong. Several of our heroes get themselves smuggled out of the country to start on their quest.
After Captain America orders the bombing of Las Vegas, Black Widow sets out with several of the younger heroes to take him out (to Black Widow this means "with prejudice". Remember back in Civil War II when there is a vision of Spiderman killing Captain America? He hints that maybe that vision is meant to come true now.
Captain America has also sent his top Hydra agents to search for the Cube. Along the way, they destroy a holy temple of Atlantis, so we may see some war with Namor.
And through it all, a woman is wandering the woods and bumps into....Steve Rogers! He's trying to find his way home, probably as some sort of "alternate timeline" Steve Rogers. I guess we'll have to wait and see!
Overall, this story is pretty interesting. With three issues down and seven to go, it doesn't feel tedious yet (like Civil War II got). I'm curious to see where everything goes. There is a side story with Black Widow and group in the new Red Room which I might go back to check out.
This is a story worth checking out. Feel free to come back here for general updates, and read the trade later, but if you want to catch up now it is worth grabbing the back issues! Start with #1 here: https://www.amazon.com/Secret-Empire-10-Nick-Spencer-ebook/dp/B06X9CXZJG/?tag=fresnerd-20
Have you read Secret Empire yet? What do you think so far?
