The day is finally here! Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 came out today in the United States (well, technically it comes out tomorrow, but the evening shows started tonight). Now I understand what it must be like for other countries when there's a delay between the U.S. release of a movie and the international release.
To put it simply, I was not disappointed! This movie captured a lot of the elements that made the original great. The humor was there, possibly with even more laugh out loud moments. There are lots of subtle jokes, and of course "Drax is an oblivious jerk" jokes as well.
There are plenty of grandiose scenes of space battles, and well choreographed hand-to-hand combat battles.
As anticipated, the trailers for this movie did it a great service. We already know that the Guardians are working together after saving the galaxy in the last movie. But their personalities are all still there, giving the fun dynamic I loved in the first movie.
While I won't give you any details about the movie in this post (that will come later, I have lots of details I want to talk about), I will say that you have to stay through all of the credits. This is kind of a given for a Marvel movie, but don't get fooled. There were I think three mid-credit scenes, but also a final post-credits scene.
Overall, really enjoyed this movie. I give it a B+.
Come back in the next few days to talk spoilers. I'll try to avoid that at least through the weekend, but there is A LOT I want to say about this movie.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is a super fun sequel! This movie was on my short list of most anticipated for 2017. I consider the first to be one the best superhero movies of all time and it’s also one of my favorite movies ever. James Gunn crafted an incredibly fresh, unique, and fun entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Vol. 1 and so I was very excited to see what he created with Vol. 2.
I had a great time watching this on IMAX on opening night. The characters that we fell in love with in Vol. 1 were as vibrant as ever. In fact, I found that the focus of this movie was to flesh out those characters more in terms of their backstory and how they wish to interact with one another. In addition, this may be the most comedy-packed Marvel movie to date. Not necessarily the funniest because I found Vol. 1’s jokes landed slightly stronger, but rather Vol. 2 probably has the highest number of funny moments in the MCU so far. I felt I was laughing for most of this film!
The movie did have some small yet noticeable flaws that resulted in it being not quite as good as the first: mainly story and flow. The first half of the film felt a little scattered since the real threat and character paths weren’t solidified until about halfway through. The second half was when the momentum kicked in. Also, things were at times rushed that certain scenes weren't allowed to stand out stylishly and be savored like with Vol. 1.
Those flaws weren’t significant, however, and overall this movie was really good. It’s a strong second run of fun action with quirky, unique characters. I also gave Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 a B+.
Time to blast some Vol. 2 tunes!
