2017 was a great year for superhero movies: Logan, The LEGO Batman Movie, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Wonder Woman, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Thor: Ragnarok, and Justice League. Combined, those seven films resulted in worldwide box office of more than $4 billion dollars! What a world we live in.
It's a great time to be a comic book geek. This year we saw Hugh Jackman's stellar swan song for the Wolverine, the first successful female-led superhero movie, and the first live-action team-up of DC's Justice League characters.
But which were the best? Us Fresnerds make a consensus ranking of our favorite superhero live-action movies of 2017.
- Thor: Ragnarok
- Wonder Woman
- Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
- Spider-Man: Homecoming
- Justice League
Our very clear winner isJames Mangold's Logan. Jaime and I had pretty identical grades this year for our superhero flicks, and Logan was the only one we gave a solid A to. This is not just the best and our favorite superhero movie of the year; it is also one of the best superhero movies EVER. Much like 2008's The Dark Knight, it's a superhero movie that transcends genres through its deep themes, strong acting, compelling story, focused directing, and respect for the characters. I'll never forget grabbing my knees in excitement at the theater during the movie's climax.
Movies #2 through #5 on our list are pretty much tied up to be #2 to be honest. They are all super fun; just not reaching a level of greatness like Logan did. Justice League was the only movie we found disappointing this year. Still at least DC had a major triumph with Wonder Woman. Hopefully Warner Bros can learn from the strengths of that movie and apply them going forward.
