With just a short month left until Christmas, we are in the final stretch of 2017. We have a couple of interesting movie releases left this year (Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water and of course Star Wars: The Last Jedi) but we wanted to take a look at what we thought where the best movies of the year so far. We'll also look at some of the stinkers.
First, a couple ground rules. This is just based on our grades (https://www.thefresnerd.com/all-fresnerd-movie-grades/) so it doesn't take into account our favorites. Second, to be counted in this list, at least two out of the three of us had to see it. If only one of us saw it, it can still make an honorable mention. And that's it! Enjoy!
Let's start with the best of the year!
At the very top are the only three "A" grades we gave out this year. Bladerunner 2049 got an A+ and an A-, rounding out to an A. Logan came close, with two A's and a B+, rounding out to a consensus A-. And Baby Driver got an A and a B+ for another consensus A-.
None of these are a particularly huge surprise. All three were critically well-received, receiving an 87%, 93% and 93%, respectively.
Honorable Mentions: IT (A-), War for the Planet of the Apes (A), It Comes at Night (A)
We had quite a few that we really liked, but came up just short of an A.
Receiving a consensus B+ were: John Wick Chapter 2, Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2, Wonder Woman, Thor Ragnarok.
This is a pretty nice run for comic book movies this year. Four out of the top seven were from that genre. For the most part (notable exception below) it seems like people have figured out how to make these movies. We're past The Incredible Hulk and the early Thor movies. This is nice to see.
Honorable Mentions (Received a consensus B or a single B+): Wind River, Dunkirk, Spider-Man Homecoming, Ghost in the Shell, Get Out, Split.
For the most part, we enjoyed the movies we saw this year. No Batman Vs. Superman this year!
Hey, speaking of Batman Vs. Superman, our only consensus C- went to Justice League. I know I can speak for everyone at this site when I say that we really, really wanted this to be a good movie! After Wonder Woman I really had hope that Warner Brothers had figured it out, but then we learned that they didn't. While there were certainly good elements, the bad stuff far outweighed the good. I'm not spending more time on this, you can check out our full review here https://www.thefresnerd.com/home/2017/11/16/justice-league-review-spoiler-free.
Honorable Mentions: Power Rangers (D+) (Jaime's Note: This is well in the lead for worst movie of the year that I've seen), The Mummy (C), Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (C).
So there you have it, our best and worst of the year (so far!). We'll be back in a month or so with a follow up if there are any changes, as well as our favorites (even if they're not the best or worst).
