Now let's be honest. It's hard to argue that something like a movie is or isn't the best. Sure you can argue it's technical merits, that it influenced generations of filmmakers, things like that. But ultimately, the goal is for the movie to be entertaining. Today I'll give you some arguments why 1993's Hocus Pocus is the best Halloween movie ever.
First of all, it's kid safe. Sure, I love The Shining and tons of other horror movies, but as a parent of two young children I'm not able to watch this type of movie while they're awake. I remember catching part of the original IT and Nightmare on Elm Street as a kid and they freaked me out. If I can avoid that with my kids I will (sure it'll happen eventually but why not put it off for now). But with Hocus Pocus I can leave it on in the background without any concerns.
The cast is great. Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy and Sarah Jessica Parker make a perfect trio of witches. With Midler they get the credibility to do a song. Najimy as the practical one, plus her delivery is brilliant. And even though I'm not a huge Sarah Jessica Parker fan, she nails the "ditzy" role to round out the group.
There's a talking cat. Before we had Salem on Sabrina the Teenage Witch we already had Thackery (side note: for the longest time I thought this was just a mispronunciation of Zachary). We love cats, everyone loves cats, and making it an immortal, talking cat just ups the adorability factor!
Even though the plot is simple, it's incredibly re-watchable. That's actually part of the brilliance. Since it's a silly story anyway, you can start watching at any point without really worrying about what's going on. "Why are they going after the kids? Oh, who cares, that's just how it is."
Seeing the witches in a modern day setting is a great fish-out-of-water story. They're perplexed by simple things like roads, phones and buses. And this still holds up. Call it luck, but there's nothing too outdated that they get amazed by, so even in 2017 we can enjoy it.
So there you have it. Hocus Pocus is the perfect Halloween movie. Let me know what you think is the best Halloween movie in the comments and I'll let you know that you're wrong (probably).
